Halal Mode is built so that your browsing stays on your computer. This page says exactly what it reads, what it looks up, and what it keeps.

Last updated 2026-11-02.

In short

  • Pictures and page text are processed on your own computer.
  • There are no analytics, no tracking and no ads, and Halal Mode never sells data.

What Halal Mode reads and does

The browser extension looks at the pages you open so it can find pictures, search results and posts, together with the text and links around them.

Images and page context are processed on your own computer.

To look at a picture, the extension uses the copy your browser has already downloaded.

The extension then removes what should not be shown from the page. It does not report to anyone what it removed.

The number on the toolbar button is kept in your browser while the page is open, and is not stored or sent anywhere.

What it looks up

Website names, to the family filter you choose

To check where a link leads, Halal Mode asks the family filter you chose.

Your browser already does this every time you open a website: before a page can load, the name of the site has to be looked up, the way you would look up a name in a phone book, to find where the site lives on the internet. Halal Mode makes that same lookup through your family filter, which refuses to look up sites you would rather not see.

Only the name of the website is asked about, never the full address of a page, the words on it or its pictures. Like any website you visit, the family filter can see your internet (IP) address.

One-time model downloads, from Hugging Face

The first time it runs, Halal Mode downloads the model files it needs from Hugging Face. Hugging Face sees your IP address and the files requested. Your browsing is not involved.

What it keeps on your computer

These stay on your computer.

  • Your settings, such as the family filter you chose.
  • The feedback you give, such as "Hide this" and "This is fine", with a fingerprint of the picture and not the picture itself.
  • A cache of earlier decisions: the answer of the family filter for each host name, and the decision about each picture so it need not be checked twice.
  • For pictures it has examined, the address of the picture and of the page it appeared on, so that a decision can be reused.

Picture files themselves are never stored.

What Halal Mode does not do

  • There are no analytics, in the app, the extension or this website.
  • There is no tracking, no advertising and no advertising identifier.
  • Halal Mode does not sell or share data. It does not receive your browsing, so there is nothing to sell.

How long it is kept

Data on your computer stays until you delete it.
